The power of a black base rim

In the interests of getting things moving on this journal, I’m logging this quick observation: it’s really surprising how big a difference it makes to paint a simple coat of black round the rim of a model’s base at the end to finish it off.

As a designer by trade I understand the theory and reasoning for this but it’s still been striking to experience first-hand.

I’ve been working on the three Farstriders models from Warhammer Underworlds—not totally happy I got the colour scheme right but at a point where I just wanted them finished for now—and once I painted round the rims/edges of the bases with a nice coat of Abandon Black they suddenly popped to life!

They’re still far from high quality but that’s to be expected: I’m only a dozen or so miniatures back into painting as a hobby. Tidying up the base though is one of those ‘cheap’ things that raises the overall feeling of quality for a miniature and a clean base provides a nice contrast and frame for the scene above it.
