Getting started with miniatures after 25 years away

Documenting my return to painting miniatures in the worlds of Warhammer.

After roughly 25 years away from the hobby, I recently decided to try my hand at painting miniatures again.

Over the years, I’ve had occasional interest in checking out what Games Workshop has been up to and remembered fondly that time in my teens, collecting miniatures and playing the games (mostly 40k, Blood Bowl and Necromunda).

With kids of my own now, our eldest had seen some of my old miniatures when we were digging around in the loft some time ago and of course got excited at the idea of Space Marines. Still a bit young though, I’d told him a bit about them and then left it there.

It planted a seed though, and past Christmas I had more of an urge to actually try my hand with painting again.

Dangerous.

What started as an idea to try painting some of my old miniatures (at the time, I bought hundreds and only ever painted a handful) inevitably spiralled quite quickly into buying new ones.

Looking for a game that might be more accessible to my son, I picked up a copy of Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress and then not long later also picked up the current Blood Bowl: Second Season edition.

Along the way, I’ve had a go at painting a few miniatures and decided to start an occasional log of progress here.
